CHILD AND ADOLESCENT
RESIDENTIAL SERVICES MISSION
Northeastern Center’s Child and Adolescent Residential Services (CARS) is committed to
providing services to children and adolescents who exhibit any of the following:
• Developmental Needs
• Emotional Needs
• Social Needs
• Educational Needs
• Family Needs
• Mental Health Needs
Currently, the CARS facility is able to house 10 males providing around the clock supervision from a staff of caring, trained professionals concentrating on a cognitive/behavioral and strength-based program. The program accepts referrals from numerous sources including the court system, probation, schools, offices of Family and Children Services, as well as private families. Both emergency short-term shelter and long-term residential treatment can be provided. CARS is licensed to provide services for boys ages 6 to 20. Consumers within that age range will be considered on an individual basis for eligibility.
SPECIAL PROGRAMS
The Growing Young Minds program utilizes the 64 acre rolling landscape and lake for a sustainable agriculture/outdoor education program that teaches many life and social skills in addition to helping clients develop respect for local ecological systems. It also provides clients with a sense of purpose, and tools to act as socially and ecologically responsible citizens in individual, familial, and social contexts. The Healing Through the Arts program has a holistic, strengths-based approach from which clients can develop skills and techniques for therapeutic self-expression in
various artistic forms. Other structured programming is provided to teach life skills, develop relationships, and build social skills appropriate for adolescents.

CONTINUITY OF CARE
As part of Northeastern Center, Child and Adolescent Residential Services is able to offer
seamless movement through the continuum of care. This is accomplished by using a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary treatment plan. The entire treatment team including
the client, parents/guardians, CARS staff, outpatient therapist, and placing agency meet
at least every 90 days to review the treatment plan and resident’s overall progress.
EDUCATION
Each resident at CARS is provided with an individualized education plan developed jointly
with education providers, family, and the NEC treatment team. Every effort is made for
residents to remain in their own community school in order to maintain the most stability.
When that is not possible, an individualized plan is made for the student, including the
option of attending DeKalb Public Schools, or a school within county of residence.
Staff assist clients in developing various skills that lead to success in school. Staff are in constant
communication with teachers and school authorities to monitor progress and success. Afterschool
sessions are provided at CARS to ensure students meet their educational goals. Students with nontraditional educational plans are provided with needed services such as modified days and
home-based schooling.
DISCHARGE PLANNING
FROM THE START
CARS staff maintains close contact with referral agency, family, and schools, to begin working toward the client’s discharge plan from day one. Reunification with family is always our
team’s primary goal and many opportunities are available for families to help this process
along, including attendance at treatment review meetings and support groups.
