Adrienne Long, associate director of child and adolescent services, provides some helpful tips to keep in mind as we approach the back-to-school season.

Q: What are some ways to make the back-to-school transition easier?

A: One of the easiest ways to make the back-to-school transition more successful is to start preparing a few weeks ahead of time. Implementing sleep schedules or morning routines, and talking to your kids about what to expect in the new school year are great ways to help prepare.

Q: How can I create open conversations with my kids?

Taking time to check-in with your kids can be crucial in keeping them happy and healthy throughout the school year. Ask specific questions such as, “What was the best part of your day?” or “How are your classes going?” Create a judgement-free zone where your kids feel safe to come to you with anything they might be struggling with and be sure to listen more than you talk. Validate how they are feeling and don’t just seek to immediately provide them with solutions.

Q: What are some early warning signs that my child may be struggling with their mental health?

No matter how well you prepare, you can never be sure what the school year might bring, and mental health struggles can be normal. However, if you see changes in your child that are lasting longer than a few days, such as:

  • Withdrawing from friends and family
  • Changes in sleep patterns or appetite
  • Behavioral changes
  • Declining grades.

These can all be signs of a deeper issue.

Q: How do I know when to seek help for my child?

It can be stressful when your child is struggling with anything. Keep in mind that early intervention with mental health needs often leads to better outcomes. If you are seeing changes that are negatively impacting your child’s daily life like the list above, it may be time to seek help. Northeastern Center is one option as we provide youth mental health services.
