April Moore, a QPR instructor for Northeastern Center, answered some frequently asked questions about the suicide-prevention program.
FAQ #1: What does QPR stand for?
QPR stands for Question, Persuade, Refer. Those are the three simple steps that anyone can take to help save a life from suicide.
FAQ #2: Can anyone learn QPR?
Just like CPR, anyone can learn and use QPR to help save a life. You do not need to be a mental health professional or even a medical professional. Teachers, administrative staff, parents, teachers, grandparents … anyone can learn the skills needed to be able to recognize the signs of suicide and implement the three simple steps: question, persuade and refer to help save a life.
FAQ #3: How does QPR help our community?
Anytime someone in our community is considering suicide, the more access they have to available resources and people who can help them is key. When more people in our communities are trained in QPR, we increase the likelihood that someone will intervene and direct people to the services they need.
FAQ #4: How much does QPR training cost?
Northeastern Center provides free QPR training to any group or organization in our local communities. Companies, small businesses, local organizations, community leaders, churches, civic organizations, schools … basically anyone who interacts with people in the community daily can benefit from the free QPR training offered by NEC. It's easy to set up a training – email training@nec.org to start the process of getting a training scheduled!
