Get the facts about alcohol use
Alcohol addiction, also referred to as alcohol use disorder or substance use disorder, is far more common than people may think. And, it can have devastating impacts. Alexis Shepherd, one of our mental health and addiction therapists, provided some important facts in honor of Alcohol Awareness Month.
Indiana
- Approximately 10% of Hoosiers age 12 and up reported having alcohol use disorder, which is the same as the national average.
- In our state, 19% of motor vehicle deaths involve alcohol.
United States
- More than six in 10 Americans drink alcohol.
- Of those who drink, 19% say they sometimes drink more than they think they should.
Global
- An estimated 400 million people, or 7% of the world’s population age 15 and older, live with alcohol use disorders.
- Drinking alcohol is associated with risks of developing noncommunicable diseases such as liver diseases, heart diseases, and different types of cancers, as well as mental health and behavioral conditions such as depression, anxiety and alcohol use disorders.
