In recognition of Alcohol Awareness Month, Staff Therapist Alexis Shepherd, a licensed mental health and addiction counselor who supports clients in some of Northeastern Center’s substance use disorder groups, shared some important reminders.

1. It’s important to talk about alcohol use, and substance use in general.

The month of April is recognized as Alcohol Awareness month. Raising awareness for Alcohol misuse along with other substance use disorders is important because it helps to reduce the stigma around substance use disorders, and it increases the awareness around the potential dangers of the misuse of different substances such as alcohol, illegal drugs, and prescription drugs.

2. The signs aren’t always what you think.

While there are many warning signs for abuse of substances, they may not be obvious, and you may not think the signs are related to substance use at first. Often, individuals who are misusing a substance begin to have struggles with:

  • Handling responsibilities.
  • Maintaining personal relationships.
  • Meeting personal goals.

3. Multiple treatment options are available.

Whether you are struggling with misuse of one substance, or multiple, Northeastern Center has an array of treatment options available to support you in your recovery. Using a comprehensive care model, NEC treats more than just the substance use problem. With accessible options and a supportive team, recovery is possible with Northeastern Center. Our Substance Use Treatment page has more information.

4. It’s OK to be nervous

It can be emotional and nerve-wracking to reach out for help in regard to a substance use disorder. In fact, it’s completely normal. However, don’t let that anxiousness stop you from getting the help you need! If you are looking to start therapy or substance use treatment, visit our New Client page for information on how to get started. And, if you are in an urgent mental health crisis, don’t wait.
