Q&A: What's a school navigator? And other answers to your back-to-school mental health questions

Thanks to community partnerships, Northeastern Center has school navigators who work with students in the DeKalb County Eastern, DeKalb County Central, and Garrett Kaiser Butler school districts. Rachel Glaser, one of those navigators, chatted with us before her school year started to tell us more about this unique role.

What is a school navigator?

A school navigator helps connect students with mental health services when they need support. They can assist with issues such as:

  • Conflict resolution
  • Problem-solving
  • Coping skills
  • Organization
  • And much more!

What if students need additional mental health resources?

When students need additional support, the navigator works with parents/guardians to refer them to the appropriate resources, such as a therapist. They can also facilitate crisis intervention services when needed.

How do you think being located in schools makes a difference?

Our presence within the schools helps to improve the culture. Always having a third-party available to talk to should you need help can improve overall outcomes and the general well-being of students and staff. When everyone is happy, school culture improves.

How can parents/guardians help support students' mental health and wellbeing during the school year?

If your child is struggling, first seek out your school's guidance counselor – they can help support and suggest programs that could be beneficial to your child. Other ways you can help support your student's mental health during the school year include:

  • Provide good structure at home.
  • Set a good routine.
  • Talk to your kids about their day and ask them questions.
  • Be involved in your kids' lives – if they tell you something, listen to them.

What other resources are available?

Even if Northeastern Center doesn't offer a navigator in your school, we offer the School Assistance Program. This program provides two free counseling sessions for students and staff from any school district in DeKalb, LaGrange, Noble and Steuben counties.
